2012 Projects
HIV PREVENTION WITH MALE SEX WORKERS – This project focuses on male sex workers that are not targeted by Round 9 of the Global Fund Grant for HIV in Sri Lanka. Our male sex workers are often engaged in part-time sex work to earn a better living.
HIV PREVENTION WITH MARITIME WORKERS – We’re conducting this intervention in partnership with the National Union of Seafarers in Sri Lanka. Our focus is on Maritime Schools where young seafarers are trained, and others return for refresher courses.
THEATRE PRODUCTIONS ON VIOLENCE & HIV – This year’s productions will build on the success of V DAY 2011, except that all stories this year are Sri Lankan, and will be performed in Sinhala and Tamil, as well as English. This kind of fusion theatre has rarely been attempted in the mainstream.
COCONUT SPOON PUPPETRY ON VIOLENCE AGAINST MARGINALIZED WOMEN – This project, funded by CREA, focuses on violence faced by lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender women. Issues such as corrective rape, and attempts to ‘pray the gay away’ will be addressed.
ESTABLISHING A SRI LANKAN NETWORK OF PEOPLE WHO USE DRUGS – Almost all key affected populations in Sri Lanka have community representation, except, people who use drugs. It is time for this long vilified community to emerge from the shadows. It is time for us to come out of the closet, and creep out of the drawers.
CONDOM CRICKET – With the T20 Cricket World Cup to be played in Sri Lanka, the time is ripe for introducing Condom Cricket, and using this effective tool to begin discussions around why condoms should have primacy over idealistic notions of abstinence ONLY approaches to HIV prevention.
