Adoption as a process is more time consuming and harder than getting pregnant yourself! (unless you try multiple rounds of IVF!)

YES, gods, yes - the smile, that ugly, filthy smile of ENTITLEMENT. The smile that says "I can do this and you can't do anything about it." The smile that says "You are less than me, you are T&A for my enjoyment, body parts, not a human being to be respected."

That smile is itself filth and violence.

I feel for you, and while violence begets more of the same generally speaking, what you did was absolutely right - I'd have done the same, and he deserved it - and he KNEW he deserved it for what he did to you and the countless other women he has undoubtedly sexually molested.

Because make no mistake, the fact that there wasn't penetration or "more" doesn't mean that this was not sexual abuse. He molested you in plain sight of others, with no fear, knowing that what he did was ALLOWED and that makes me furious as well.

Anger can be used as a tool for progress. Use your anger, cleanse with your anger - don't turn it inward, don't let it damage you or make you feel as if you've done anything wrong. NO, you weren't wearing a skirt that was too short. There is no such thing, no woman, no matter WHAT the circumstances, "deserves" to be handled by any man as if she were an item for his arousal or entertainment.

Part of the ugliness of this is that he KNEW how upset you were, and derived much of his enjoyment from your discomfort.

This kind of thing is about power over, not about sex, per se. This man can surely get sex if he wants it - he got off on forcing you to be fondled and touched against your will, on feeling superior and powerful.

And that, against your will, is abuse. We don't call it rape unless there is penetration, but what is rape exactly? You felt violated, you WERE violated. We're all grateful that you were violated further but that doesn't alter how badly you were treated, the violation you did sustain.

You're strong and brave.

We all must be, we all must fight back, with letters and protests and pressure until the government(s) make clear that this IS CRIME and will not be tolerated. Zero tolerance for this most ugly blatant form of molestation - this and so many other similar acts perpetrated in societies that still allow men to treat us as if we were no more than a collection of body parts.

I still couldn't publish it.hoping to do it if possible within next three months. true that's the coping strategy we use but that's not a good one.why should we always use less space and be uncomfortable because of a disgusting activity they do.this thing always pisses me off.we have to do something sustainable for this.government has done one research on this.very recently. that's the only proper research done regarding this issue i guess.

I travel by bus daily and have been interested in the many coping strategies and responses that women (including you and me)use in public transport. The most obvious coping strategies are the ones that we use all the time - minimizing the space we use up on the seat and minimizing contact - and one of the most overt responses is the slap. But maybe we can also study the other ways women respond to abuse in public transport?

Have you published or presented your undergraduate research anywhere? I think one of the reasons we don't know if these issues have been studied or not is because there is no database or public access to research unless it is published as a book. So we are constantly reinventing the wheel, i.e. no one builds on previous research, it is not available for discussion, etc.

Sarah, fantastic! I hope others will follow your lead. We need to do more on buses and trains in Sri Lanka than just once a year campaigns that are dependent on global agendas.

cheers Sarah.. I don't understand what the fuck kind entertainment or sexual satisfaction these people can get from abuse a girl in the public transport.. I think whole patriarchal is interconnected with this. when I went to India I saw how women empowered against the sexual harassment in buses. happy to see a example from Sri Lanka !!! I think sexual harassment in buses are very normalised in Sri Lanka. some times people don't feel and speak openly against that.. let's start to speak openly !!! this is an example and warning for people who do harassment.

it seems that you all had a great experience there. it is true that we have seen only the beauty and the richness in India but the reality is hidden inside. Pune is a nice city where nice and kind-hearted people live. I also had a nice experience there last year. but I couldnt get time to visit SLUMS in Pune.you all are lucky to visit slums which tells you the bitter reality. your experience seems to be hard and bitter but still you have learnt a lot to proceed in your career in HIV field. And the HIV program and walk with KIDS are amazing and appreciative. I really like that!
Best regards!
